Rules

Such a strange day here. It is snowing. My friends are abuzz with the news of BH's passing.

Here are a bunch of famous writer's rules for writing fiction. What are yours?

And here's part two (including Joyce Carol Oates)

My only rule these days is to keep going while it's hard and stop while it's easy. Other people have said that rule better. I don't know if it's making me write more but it is making me feel better about what I manage to do. Post snow pictures!

My rule this semester is to write alongside my creative writing students. To do all of the assignments and exercises I assign to the. I've got about a 60% success rate. I did write some poems, though, and I submitted them everywhere. That felt good.

I'm so excited about the poem submitting.

My new rule is that I don't have to only be inspired by fiction. Which is dumb to have to articulate to myself, but there have been times when absorbing myself in visual art or non-fiction felt like a betrayal, like "cheating on" fiction, our mistress and master.

So another question: which of these rules resonated with you, inspired you, made you laugh, stuck out for whatever reason? I've haven't yet got through them but plan to tomorrow.
