Walter Mosley has some encouraging words about beginning a novel. Anyone else thought about giving the novel a good honest effort after three years of stories?
I met Mr. Mosley at AWP. He was a cut-up. I didn't know who he was at the time, but I knew I was supposed to know because everyone sort of perked up and twisted around when he walked in and sat down in the audience of a panel. He had that famous person glittery-ness. I wonder when in the career of a writer that happens? I'm guessing it has something to do with being recognized--which has got to be rare.
As for novels, I'm revising a bit of my thesis with that in mind. Guess what the main character's name is? Gabby Lance. (I kid, I kid). Is anyone trying to extend something short into a novel? If so we should have pancakes together and invite bearden as a guest speaker and talk about this...
i think bunny is a novel. and i guess, at one time, she was short, but now she is longer, and unfinished. and i still love her, but i'm not as interested in her as i have been. i'm kind of sick of her, in fact. i hope she doesn't slip away.
when i think of writing, though, i'm still thinking in terms of story. character and issue and all that.
